TUT APS Score: Calculation, Requirements & APS Calculator

TUT APS Score

The TUT APS Score is used during the admission and selection process at Tshwane University of Technology. TUT looks at recognised school subjects and their achievement levels when assessing applications.

The required score varies by programme. Your subjects, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, and the requirements of the qualification can affect the APS needed for admission.

Admission Point Score (APS)

The Admission Point Score, or APS, is one of the factors TUT uses when assessing applications. The score comes from recognised subjects and their achievement ratings.

Life Orientation is not included in the APS calculation. An achievement level of 1 in a subject is also not counted.

Applicants generally need a National Senior Certificate (NSC) at NQF Level 4 or an equivalent qualification. Depending on the programme, the required subjects can include English, Mathematics, Technical Mathematics, or Mathematical Literacy.

A programme may also have additional subject requirements. Reaching the required APS does not by itself guarantee admission.

TUT APS Calculation

TUT calculates the APS from the achievement ratings of six recognised subjects. Each percentage range has a corresponding APS value.

NSC PercentageAPS Points
80–100%7
70–79%6
60–69%5
50–59%4
40–49%3
30–39%2
0–29%1

A result between 70% and 79% gives 6 APS points, while a result between 80% and 100% gives 7 points.

The calculation uses six recognised subjects. Life Orientation is excluded. You must also meet the subject requirements for the programme you choose.

TUT APS Requirements

TUT does not have one APS requirement for all programmes. The minimum score changes according to the qualification and its admission requirements.

Official TUT programme information includes examples with minimum APS requirements of 22, 23, 24, and 25 or higher. Some programmes also have different requirements for applicants taking Mathematics, Technical Mathematics, or Mathematical Literacy.

Check the APS requirement for your chosen programme before applying. A score that meets the requirement for one qualification may not be enough for another.

TUT APS Calculator

A TUT APS Calculator can help you work out your score from your subject results. Enter the relevant subject marks and use the achievement ratings to calculate the total for six recognised subjects.

Life Orientation is not included in the calculation.

Once you have your APS, compare it with the requirement for the programme you want to study. The calculated score does not guarantee admission.

TUT APS for Alternative and International Qualifications

Applicants with alternative or international qualifications may have their qualifications evaluated differently.

The qualifications listed in the TUT information include:

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  • National Certificate (Vocational) (NC-V)
  • IGCSE
  • HIGCSE
  • NSSC
  • O-Level
  • A-Level
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • SAT

Applicants with alternative or international qualifications may need a certificate of equivalence from SAQA or CHE. TUT states that applicants must obtain the required certificate themselves.

The qualification conversion information shows how recognised certificates are evaluated against the National Senior Certificate.

TUT APS and Admission Requirements

APS is only one part of the TUT admission process. Applicants must also meet the academic requirements for their chosen qualification.

TUT’s general information states that bachelor’s degrees require at least four subjects at performance level 4, while diplomas require at least four subjects at performance level 3.

Individual programmes may have additional requirements.

Applicants may apply using Grade 11 or mid-year Grade 12 results. In some cases, admission can be provisional until final Grade 12 results are submitted.

TUT APS and Programme Selection

Meeting the minimum APS does not guarantee admission to a TUT programme. TUT also evaluates applicants and considers the number of places available.

The Student Enrolment Plan (SEP) is used when managing available places. If a programme receives more completed applications than it has places, applicants may be selected according to the programme’s selection process.

Once a programme is full, applicants may be placed on a waiting list.
